Jonathan Z. Cannon first joined Beveridge & Diamond, P.C. in 1975, after serving as a clerk for Chief Judge David L. Bazelon on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He was a Principal in the firm from 1980 until 1986 and his areas of practice were environmental law and litigation. In 1986, he left Beveridge & Diamond to join the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In January 1987, Mr. Cannon was named EPA Deputy General Counsel for Litigation and Regional Operations. From August 1987 to August 1988, he was the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Civil Enforcement in EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Monitoring. In August 1988, he became Deputy Assistant Administrator of the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER), and from March through November 1989, he served as Acting Assistant Administrator for OSWER. In January 1990 he returned to practice law as a Principal at Beveridge & Diamond.

In September 1992, Mr. Cannon returned to EPA. In July 1993, he was appointed Assistant Administrator for Administration and Resource Management and Chief Financial Officer. In July 1995, he was named General Counsel of EPA and served in that capacity until July 1998. Mr. Cannon is Professor and Director of Environmental Law Programs at the University of Virginia School of Law and Senior Counsel with Beveridge & Diamond.

Mr. Cannon is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Environment, Energy and Resources Section of the American Bar Association. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College in 1967 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1974.
