Jim Esselman is Of Counsel in the Washington, D.C. office of Beveridge & Diamond, P.C. His practice focuses on complex civil litigation in both state and federal court as well as administrative proceedings before federal agencies. Jim has handled litigation matters under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Jim has also litigated several state land use and zoning cases, including a successful argument before the Supreme Court of Virginia. Jim also has experience with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), having handled a complex arbitration matter under FIFRA. In addition, Jim has counseled clients with regard to regulatory matters, particularly related to FIFRA, NEPA, CERCLA, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and the Clean Air Act (CAA). Jim's pro bono work includes successfully representing an applicant for asylum in proceedings before the Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals, and drafting estate planning documents for clients through the Legal Services Program of the Whitman-Walker Clinic. He received bachelor's degrees in Economics and International Studies from American University in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2000, where he served as Articles Editor for the Virginia Journal of International Law. Before attending law school, Jim worked as a research analyst with the United States Agency for International Development in the areas of international health, population, and environmental matters. He is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the Virginia Supreme Court. Outside of the office, Jim enjoys golf, basketball, biking, and hiking, and he is fluent in French. |
