Ms. Szmuszkovicz chairs the Pesticides and Biotechnology Section of Beveridge & Diamond's Litigation Practice Group. Since 1984, she has provided commercial, litigation, and regulatory services to clients with legal needs related to the manufacture, sale and use of products regulated by EPA, USDA, and FDA. Ms. Szmuszkovicz’s practice focuses on the pesticide, food, biotechnology, and consumer product businesses. In addition, she addresses the use of nanotechnology in these and other industries. Her activities include strategic planning, compliance counseling, commercial transactions, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Examples of her work include: advising clients on strategies for obtaining federal approvals for new products or substances, defending products once they are on the market, and phasing out products for regulatory or commercial reasons; advising clients who manufacture, sell, or use these regulated products on regulatory requirements; defending companies against enforcement actions; proposing and commenting on regulatory and legislative initiatives; facilitating clients’ acquisition or sale of particular products or businesses; and bringing or defending litigation where necessary to protect clients’ products, projects, or practices. Ms. Szmuszkovicz has litigated in federal courts across the country, including the U.S Supreme Court, and has represented clients in every EPA region. Throughout her career, she has represented clients from diverse industries in a variety of ADR proceedings, including both ADR mandated by federal law and ADR designed by parties to resolve disputes privately without court intervention. For six years, Ms. Szmuszkovicz served on the Board of Directors of a privately held company that discovers, manufactures and sells proprietary chemicals. She has served on Beveridge & Diamond's Management Committee for nearly ten years. Before her legal career, Ms. Szmuszkovicz served in federal and Michigan state government. |
