Inaugural Cohort/Class of Thurgood Marshall Opportunity Program Interns Begins Summer Learning Experience at Maryland Attorney General’s office

Beveridge & Diamond, P.C., May 25, 2013

Fueled by Beveridge & Diamond’s initiative and sponsorship, Maryland’s new Thurgood Marshall Opportunity Program will welcome on May 28th its first group of seven law students to work for the Maryland Office of the Attorney General this summer.

A diverse panel of six attorneys from the Office of the Attorney General reviewed 57 applications from eleven law schools.   The selected law student interns hail from University of Maryland (five students), University of Baltimore (one student) and Howard University (one student), and will work in various divisions within the AG’s Office.

Programs for the interns will range from informal networking opportunities to topical discussions related to career development and diversity in the legal profession.   Beveridge & Diamond will host the first program, an informal welcome breakfast, on June 7.

This initiative grew out of a brainstorming session in 2012 among Beveridge & Diamond’s Managing Principal, Ben Wilson, Firmwide Diversity Principal, Paula Schauwecker, and Baltimore office Managing Principal, Pamela Marks, and the Maryland Attorney General and key advisors on topics including promotion of public sector opportunities and enhancing opportunities for a diverse attorneys throughout the legal profession.  Thereafter, Beveridge & Diamond hosted planning sessions and recruited four other law firm sponsors for the initiative.

Personal connections are important for helping law students to grow into successful practitioners, so these internships will be supplemented with programs that provide forums for the interns, their mentors within the AG’s office, and sponsoring firms to engage.
