Washington, D.C. – Beveridge & Diamond, P.C., the environmental, land use, and litigation law firm, is pleased to announce that Peter J. Schaumberg has joined the Firm’s Land Use Group as Of Counsel in its Washington, D.C. office.  Schaumberg had worked for 25 years at the U.S. Department of the Interior, most recently as the Deputy Associate Solicitor for the Division of Mineral Resources/Assistant Solicitor for Onshore Minerals.

“With the recent expansion of our Land Use Group in San Francisco, the addition of Peter to our team here in Washington secures a strategic edge on both coasts,” said Fred Wagner, chair of Beveridge & Diamond’s Land Use and Project Development Practice Group.  “Peter brings more than two decades of experience in federal public lands, energy development, and royalty regulation and litigation.  This depth and breadth of knowledge surrounding the minerals programs of the Department of the Interior, in particular, will be a critical asset to our firm and our clients as we maintain our position as the recognized leader in environmental and land use law.”

In his role as Deputy Associate Solicitor, Schaumberg was responsible for managing a division of 22 attorneys that provided legal advice to the minerals programs of the Department of the Interior including the Bureau of Land Management, the Minerals Management Service and the Office of Surface Mining.  As an advisor to the Secretary of the Interior, the Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management, and the three bureau directors and staff, Schaumberg counseled these top officials on federal litigation, rulemaking and legislative drafting and review.  Schaumberg developed a broad range of expertise in the principal areas of legal practice including federal and Indian lease royalty management, offshore minerals management, onshore federal minerals and surface mining.

Schaumberg previously served as the Deputy Assistant General Counsel for Petroleum Regulations in the United States Department of Energy and was an Honors Program Attorney in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service.

Schaumberg has received numerous service awards including the Presidential Rank Senior Executive Service Meritorious Service Award and the Secretary of the Interior Meritorious Service Award. He has also co-authored several articles including, “Patent Pending: Department of the Interior Administration of the Mining Laws,” 46 Rocky Mt. Min. L. Inst. Ch. 16 (2000) and a section on “Royalty and Valuation and Payment” in Chapter 7 (Federal, State, And Indian Lands) in Lowe, Anderson, Smith, and Pierce, Eds., Oil and Gas Law (4th Ed. 2002).

Schaumberg is a Cum Laude graduate of Tulane University, and received his JD, with honors, from George Washington University National Law Center.  He is also a member of the District of Columbia Bar, Supreme Court Bar and a member of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation.
