Update (June 16): Law360 published its interview with Julius Redd (Principal, Washington, DC) following his Rising Star recognition earlier this month. Julius described the trajectory of his early career and experience in environmental law, his commitment to the growing field of environmental justice, and his pro bono prisoner advocacy practice.

Washington, DC (June 4): Beveridge & Diamond Principal Julius M. Redd (Washington, DC) has been recognized as a 2021 Law360 Rising Star in the Environmental practice area. Out of more than 1,400 nominations, Law360 selected “180 attorneys under 40 whose legal accomplishments transcend their age.” Julius is one of only five attorneys recognized in the Environmental category.

Julius’s recent work includes the Volkswagen monitorship, one of the largest environmental cases in U.S. history, where he led a multidisciplinary team of over twenty attorneys, auditors, and other professionals that focused on the company’s remediation efforts of its environmental compliance system. The monitorship resulted from the company’s criminal plea agreement and civil consent decree stemming from the company’s scheme to sell diesel vehicles containing software designed to cheat on U.S. emissions tests.  In a separate matter, Julius was a key member of the trial team that secured a favorable settlement in a Clean Water Act citizen suit where plaintiffs sought $4T in damages in Sierra Club v. BNSF, 13-cv-00967.

Julius co-chairs B&D’s Environmental Justice (EJ) practice. He represents clients in EJ proceedings, helps companies design and implement programs to incorporate EJ considerations in project decision-making, and prepares industry-focused guidance regarding EJ. Beyond his EJ practice, he is a veteran litigator who has a demonstrated track record of obtaining favorable results for clients in complex civil litigation and administrative regulatory proceedings, including matters arising under the major environmental statutes.

Julius also maintains an active pro bono practice and civic volunteer profile. He is a founding member of the Men of Color Project (MoCP), an organization designed to build leaders in the legal sector, facilitate intergenerational support, and encourage community service and civic engagement amongst men of color in the legal profession.

Additionally, Julius serves on the Gettysburg College President’s Special Advisory Circle, where he advises the college president on developing the institution’s new strategic plan. He is also a member of the board of directors of Unity Christian Fellowship, Inc., a S.T.E.M.-focused youth development organization.
