Mark Duvall Quoted in Inside TSCA on Industry Sharing of Exposure Data

Principal Mark Duvall (Washington, DC) was quoted in Inside EPA’s Inside TSCA on the importance of sharing industrial hygiene data with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Mark says by sharing this data, EPA can focus on risk evaluation during the initial step of evaluating existing chemicals under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

In the article, titled “Experts Urge Industry To Share Occupational Exposure Data With EPA,” Mark makes the point that “if you have a sufficiently sensitive detection method, you can have values that are going to show the actual level of exposure, and so they can be helpful for EPA in assessing what the actual exposures are, even though the purpose of them was to find out whether you're complying with OSHA requirements.”

Mark noted that companies often conduct industrial hygiene monitoring to comply with the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA)’s permissible exposure limits, which may exceed EPA’s existing chemical exposure limits. However, he also explained that these monitoring methods typically offer more sensitive and quantifiable results than basic detection, providing valuable insights into actual exposure levels.
