Jimmy Slaughter Speaking at Boston Bar Association Event on the Regulation and Litigation of Emerging Contaminants PFAS and 1-4 Dioxane

Jimmy Slaughter (Principal, Washington, DC) will speak on Regulation and Litigation of Emerging Contaminants PFAS and 1-4 Dioxane, at a Boston Bar Association (BBA) event on Thursday, April 27.

A new class of emerging contaminants poses challenges at remediation sites and for the protection of drinking water and is generating new toxic tort and other types of litigation.  Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and 1-4 dioxane are emerging contaminants that are being identified at several sites in many areas of the country.  The U.S. EPA and many states, including Massachusetts, are beginning to issue guidelines, advisories, or in some cases standards for PFAS in drinking water, soil, or groundwater.  At the same time, several cases on a variety of legal theories are winding their way through the courts.  This program will discuss what these emerging contaminants are, how they are being regulated, and the types of litigation they are spawning.

The event is sponsored by the Hazardous and Solid Waste Committee of BBA's Environmental and Energy Law Section.  Marc Goldstein (Principal, Wellesley, MA) serves as co-chair of the Committee, which serves to inform BBA members about issues relating to federal and Massachusetts laws governing oil, hazardous materials and hazardous waste, including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Chapter 21E.
