B&D Featured in Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy’s 2024 Annual Report

B&D proudly contributes to Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy (LSE), an initiative of Stanford Law School that connects non-profits and start-ups focused on environmental sustainability with law firms to provide pro bono legal services. In 2024, 22 firms collectively contributed over $25 million in pro bono services for sustainability matters. LSE recently highlighted B&D’s pro bono sustainability work in its 2024 Annual Report.

Since 2019, B&D has contributed more than $2 million in pro bono legal services to support environmental sustainability, including over $250,000 in 2024. LSE’s Annual Report recognizes the firm’s participation and our commitment to providing at least $250,000 in pro bono legal services for new and ongoing sustainability matters in 2025.

This year’s report highlights our work with several organizations, including:

  • Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT), a regional non-profit land conservation organization protecting natural areas and farmland for wildlife and people in the Greater-Boston area. In 2024, B&D successfully pursued violations of a conservation restriction by the fee owner of the property, Iron Horse Equestrian, on behalf of SVT.
  • Round the Bend Farm, a non-profit farm in Dartmouth, MA, dedicated to sustainable food production and community education. B&D provides pro bono counsel regarding the property’s legacy diesel contamination, advising Round the Bend with respect to Massachusetts 21E requirements and remediation being managed by the former owners. With B&D’s support, Round the Bend Farm can focus on its mission to develop its sustainable working farm while educating the community.
  • Roseland Community Gardens, a non-profit in downtown Columbus, OH, supplies free locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs to the community in an area where fresh, affordable food is a scarcity. In 2024, Roseland built more garden box plots that are open for individual community member use. They also now have a rainwater collection system next to their community gathering area featuring the garden’s original little free library.

Brook Detterman, Boston Office Managing Principal and Chair of B&D's Sustainability Committee, said, “I’m proud of the work that we’ve done in 2024 and look forward to supporting further supporting pro bono clients focused on enhancing sustainability across the country in 2025.”

As one of the nation’s leading environmental law firms, B&D takes a leadership role in sustainability for law offices. We translate our values into action by improving the firm’s sustainability and reducing its environmental impacts through the work of our Sustainability Committee. The firm also participates at the “Leadership” level in EPA’s Green Power Partnership, purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in an amount equivalent to 100% of its electricity usage across all of our offices nationwide.
