Megan Morgan Discusses Building Deep Industry Experience and Client Relationships on The Lawyer’s Edge Podcast

The Lawyer’s Edge

Principal Megan Morgan (Baltimore) joined The Lawyer’s Edge podcast to discuss how she built her environmental litigation practice in the waste and recycling industry, the importance of understanding clients’ businesses, and how she develops long-term client relationships.

In the interview titled “Building a Legal Practice Through Industry Specialization,” Megan explained how her work on an early landfill permitting case led to a broader practice, explaining that she “does everything from constitutional litigation, citizens suits, regulatory and compliance advice.” She discussed how developing deep industry knowledge allows her to anticipate legal challenges and draw on experience across facilities and jurisdictions.

Megan emphasized that effective client relationships extend beyond legal expertise. Understanding a client's business priorities, financial considerations, and broader legal challenges helps attorneys provide more practical advice. She also highlighted the value of collaborating with other B&D lawyers who bring specialized regulatory knowledge to client matters.

The conversation also explored Megan's approach to business development, including participating in industry conferences, building relationships with consultants and trade associations, and mentoring associates. She encouraged lawyers developing specialized practices to actively participate in the industries they serve.

"You have to be in the room," Megan said, emphasizing the importance of attending industry events and participating in conversations about emerging policies, challenges, and business priorities.

Megan is a litigator and counselor who leads large teams on B&D’s largest and most critical environmental cases. Megan has an intricate knowledge of landfills and other solid waste facilities. She represents clients in court and before agencies across the country on major landfill permits, enforcement actions, mass tort and class actions, and citizen suits. Her multidisciplinary background—including an MBA—enables Megan’s ability to find business-forward paths. She also co-chairs B&D’s ESG, Sustainability practice, leading the firm’s strategic thinking on this rapidly developing subject matter.
