Law360 Names Jimmy Slaughter an Environmental MVP

Law360

Update (October 19) – Law360 today published its interview of Jimmy Slaughter following his MVP win earlier this month. Jimmy told Law360 he enjoys defending America’s solid waste and wastewater infrastructure, including litigating for and against local governments and defending tort lawsuits on issues of major public concern. Jimmy emphasized the importance of lawyers learning the science underlying environmental law and how a client’s business works, whether landfills, treatment plants, waste-to-energy facilities, or farms.

Washington, DC (October 5) – Law360 today named Beveridge & Diamond litigator James B. "Jimmy" Slaughter as one of its 2020 MVPs in the environmental law category.  According to Law360, "[MVP awardees] distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals. Competition for the MVP distinction was fierce this year, with editors reviewing more than 900 submissions to determine the winners...which include 189 attorneys from 76 firms spanning 38 practice areas."

Jimmy’s recent accomplishments include winning a writ of mandate against Los Angeles County voiding permit terms for a client’s landfill (achieving savings valued at over $200 million), securing preemption of a Baltimore air ordinance, and defeating at hearing a $5 million enforcement order. Jimmy also recently scored a rare equitable estoppel ruling against a major local government, allowing his client to challenge numerous provisions of a conditional use permit.

"All of us at B&D are very proud of Jimmy for achieving this distinctive recognition from Law360.  As our clients know, engaging Jimmy and his carefully-developed teams for each case means they're getting one of the sharpest, most focused environmental and tort litigators in the country. Jimmy goes to the mat for clients with hard work, sharp arguments, and thorough preparation.  Most of all, he wins!  He's definitely an MVP to the firm and our clients." said Kathy Szmuszkovicz, B&D's Managing Principal.

Jimmy's award from Law360 follows other recognition he and B&D colleagues have received for excellence in environmental litigation, including four selections in 2019 and 2020 as Runner-Up in The American Lawyer's Litigator of the Week column.
