Beveridge & Diamond Commends Firm Client, City of Newark, NJ, On Its Innovative Lead Pipe Replacement Program
Nearly all of Newark’s service lines have been replaced with copper pipes in record time.
Beginning in 2019 and led by Director of Water and Sewer Kareem Adeem, the City of Newark implemented a first-of-its-kind program to replace all of its lead service lines (now totaling over 22,000) free of charge to residents. The program is expected to conclude by the end of this month, less than three years after the city first broke ground on the project. Beveridge & Diamond (B&D) joins other organizations (e.g. The New York Times, The Gothamist, The Guardian, and even the Natural Resources Defense Council) in recognizing Newark's impressive achievement, which will likely serve as a model for the nation.
In early 2021, B&D successfully concluded the defense of the City of Newark against a federal lawsuit alleging violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act related to lead in drinking water, for which Firm lawyers Bina Reddy, Eric Klein, and Roy Prather were recognized as Litigators of the Week by American Lawyer. Newark has emerged from its drinking water challenges stronger than ever, and B&D congratulates the City, Mayor Ras Baraka, and its leadership, including Director Adeem, for serving as an example of the great things public servants can do when they come together to solve problems.
