Firmwide Managing Principal Marc Goldstein Featured in Law360 Interview

Law360

B&D Principal Marc Goldstein (Boston), who became B&D’s Firmwide Managing Principal in January 2023, recently sat down with Law360 to discuss the outlook for the firm, his role, and what he hopes to accomplish in his tenure. Among other topics, the interview covered Marc’s thoughts on the firm’s strategic plan, the rise of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) related work, and the firm’s sustainability efforts.

While discussing the firm’s strategic plan, which is currently under development, Marc said that it “focuses on four things: Our people, clients, culture and our practice areas and how they intersect with each other.” He explained that the plan was developed in response to significant client and internal feedback, and with the premise of exploring what kind of firm B&D wants to be five, ten, and fifteen years down the road.

“We're trying to figure out how we want to grow, where we want to grow, where our people work, and how they will work together.”

Marc also discussed the rise of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) related work, an area that is one of the building blocks of B&D’s practice. He said, “because we're an environmental law firm, the "E" has always been part of the core of what we've done.” And explained that B&D is well-positioned to take on the increase in demand in ESG-related matters because of the trust the firm has built with clients.

Marc explained that while maintaining his nationally-recognized litigation practice and managing B&D will be a “delicate balance,” he finds that continuing to practice helps keep him in touch with both firm and client needs. He now considers the firm his client in addition to the businesses and other organizations he’s worked alongside on a day-to-day basis.

Finally, Marc talked about what B&D does internally as “The Environmental Law Firm” and how the firm operates as eco-friendly as possible in all seven offices. He said, “We felt that if we were going to do this kind of work, we needed to walk the walk.” Marc mentioned B&D’s participation in the Law Firm Sustainability Network’s American Legal Industry Sustainability Standard and the firm offsetting 100% of the electricity through EPA’s Green Power Partnership and the firm’s pro bono sustainability work.
