B&D Again Wins MCCA’s George B. Vashon Innovator Award for DE&I

At the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA)’s annual conference, B&D received the 2023 George B. Vashon Innovator Award (Vashon Award). MCCA presents the Vashon Award, named after New York’s first licensed African American attorney, George B. Vashon, to a company not ranked in the FORTUNE® 500 and a law firm with fewer than 500 attorneys that “have led the way with innovative best practices to assist diverse attorneys.” MCCA bases its determination on an extensive diversity survey as well as a firm’s recruiting, retention, and promotion efforts regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I). MCCA also recognized B&D with a Vashon Award in 2018 and 2022.

DE&I Committee Chair Stacey Sublett Halliday said, “We are honored to receive the Vashon Award for the second year in a row. B&D is committed to furthering DE&I in the legal community and ensuring that lawyers from historically underrepresented communities thrive at B&D.”

Recent highlights of B&D’s DE&I outcomes include:

  • 49% of our lawyers are diverse (includes women, minorities, and openly LGBTQ+ individuals).
  • 68% of our associates, 38% of our principals and 46% of our attorneys overall are female.
  • 50% of our management committee attorneys are women or minorities.
  • 19% of our attorneys are minorities or openly LGBTQ.

Working together with our clients, diverse bar organizations, and others, B&D develops, maintains, and participates in a variety of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives involving lawyers and staff firmwide. We are Mansfield 6.0 Plus Certified by the Diversity Lab, having participated in the Mansfield Rule since the Mansfield 2.0 pilot. Learn more about our DE&I efforts and accomplishments.
